| First published in 1936, the Sabiston Textbook has served generations of surgeons as the defining text in the field. The 17th Edition carries on this distinguished legacy, presenting the world's most thorough, useful, readable, and understandable coverage of the principles and techniques of surgery. Sweeping changes include comprehensive updates to reflect the latest knowledge and techniques...a new, full-color page layout for enhanced ease of reference... a new image bank CD-ROM containing over 1,300 illustrations, intraoperative photographs, tables, diagnostic images, graphs, pie charts, algorithms, and anatomical drawings all downloadable to Powerpoint presentations. Excerpt from Claude Organ Foreword "The 17th edition of Townsend: Sabiston Textbook of Surgery represents an historical landmark. . . Reviews "The 17th edition of Townsend: Sabiston Textbook of Surgery represents an historical landmark. . . The Editors have brought to this bold departure from previous editions significant clinical and research experience and important elements of balanced functionality---information that is useful to the practitioner, resident, and student. . . An outstanding group of diverse contributors. . .all well-informed and known major contributors to their fields." -- Excerpt from Claude Organ Foreword "There is no doubt that this edition of Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery is a must for all surgeons. The chapters are comprehensive, well written and up-to-date. The layout and general presentation is superb with several colour illustrations and tables throughout. The detail covered in each chapter is all encompassing and spans areas such as embryology, anatomy and the basic sciences. It is invaluable for surgical trainees preparing for their exams and provides a good spread of selected references at the end of a chapter. I recommend this textbook without hesitation." -- Mohamed Baguneid, Executive Council, Association of Surgeons in Training, UK , March 2004 "Rather than reinventing itself, the new Sabiston offers much of the familiarity of its previous edition. There is the same emphasis on good prose and clear tables, with the added benefits of clear flow charts and the judicious use of colour. The reference sections have been expanded and brought up to date and overall Sabiston remains a firm contender for the SpR's/ Resident's primary home text and reference manual." -- Michael J Lamparelli, Consultant Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon, Dorchester, UK , March 2004 "Conceptually this textbook is ahead of the rest. You may never need to buy another general surgical text! The on-line version and the updates set it apart as unique and the re-organisation of the previous layout has improved the ease of use beyond recognition. The format is well laid out and diagrams, of which there are many, are easy to understand. I certainly wish this was available when I was studying for the exit exam since many of the new sections are very relevant to modern day practice!" -- Andrew Renwick MD FRCS, Colon and Rectal Fellow, Concord Hospital, Sydney , March 2004 "I would recommend the 17th edition of Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery to every surgeon in training. It builds upon the pattern of learning set out from previous editions where anatomy, physiology and diagnosis are reviewed for each system. These essential steps allow the surgeon to understand the subsequent treatment sections. The great advances shown in this book are the easy to read text that benefits from coloured illustrations, tables and useful algorithms. The option of web-based access allows the surgeon to easily review these facts and references whilst in the hospital setting. In addition, the hundreds of coloured photographs bring the book to life to those studying for MRCS and the general surgical intercollegiate examination." -- Mr Guy F Nash MD FRCS (Gen Surg) , March 2004 "This classic surgical text book is now available in an all-colour 17th edition with many new and interesting features. The Editors responsible for the 16th edition have fully revised and updated it for this edition including: 1 Superb full colour illustrations that enhance the detailed descriptions of anatomy, pathology and surgical procedures. 2 Individual sections are colour-coded to aid navigation through the text. They work well as for other best selling texts. 3 Colour is also used for the many tables in this edition making them easier to read. Colour-coded algorithms for dealing with various situations are also excellent although tend to reflect American surgical practice and not that of Europe. 4 References are presented in two ways; those used to write the chapter and those useful for further study with a brief précis accompanying each. The references for further study are very useful but are mostly American references and again are not representative of practice in Europe. 5 A whole host of chapters covering ethics, principles of surgery, ultrasound, minimally invasive surgery have been updated for this edition. 6 Another novel feature is the inclusion of a CD-Rom with illustrations from the text for use in presentations. The text can also be purchased with an additional e-dition which allows the subscriber to update their text and to search archives for images and references. A good idea but most people find reading text from a website tedious and unless they have broadband will find downloading sections also time-consuming. Even in this electronic age people still prefer books they can dip into than electronic media. " -- Mr Dominic Slade (4th year Specialist Registrar) , April 2004 "The 17th edition of the Sabiston Textbook of Surgery remains one of the authorative reference texts of general surgery, appealing to the basic or higher surgical trainee as well as the established consultant surgeon. This latest edition has been completely revised with a full-colour page layout, resulting in a text that is easy to read and understand, complemented with colourful tables, diagrams and treatment algorithms, as well as full colour operative photographs. Each chapter have been extensively updated with new reference lists, including selected references of particular appeal to the reader requiring further information. This latest edition is truly multimedia being also available on-line or with a CD-ROM containing many of the books illustrations in a downloadable format. If you are going to buy only one surgical reference text, then this must surely be at the top of your list." -- John S Knight, Specialist Registrar in General Surgery, Wessex Region, UK , April 2004 |
